Arts and Social Justice Fellows Program
Carlton is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of The Arts and Social Justice Program at Emory College of Arts and Sciences brings together artists and faculty to integrate creative expression into academic courses, using art as a tool to examine and address social inequities.
Through its fellowship component, Atlanta-based artists are paired with Emory faculty to co-teach classes, incorporating creative practices into the curriculum throughout the semester. The program also extends beyond the classroom, offering community programming that invites the broader public to engage in interactive arts activities focused on social justice initiatives in Atlanta.
In the summer and fall of 2020, Emory professors and students joined with Atlanta artists to explore how creative thinking and artistic expression can inspire change.
In the intervening years, the ASJ program has expanded beyond the classroom as it began new partnerships with Atlanta organizations and institutions, including the BeltLine, Midtown Alliance, and Spelman College.
