Carlton founded 50 Shades of Black as a community-engaged, art-based platform for celebrating the many manifestations Blackness around the world and looking critically at the intersections of sexuality & skin tone in the formation of Black identity.
50 Shades of Black also examines the historical ways in which race and gender have been created and the impact these constructions have on our aesthetic perceptions and our understanding of our own value.
